Alan Lamont
27.5.1950 - 19.9.2021
The Blue Mountains community lost a local icon this year with the sudden passing of Alan (Alby) Lamont.
Alby was born in the UK in 1950 and migrated to Australia as an eight-year-old in 1958, settling first in the Green Valley area before living in towns including Nyngan and eventually making his way to the Blue Mountains area. He had three brothers and two sisters with one oft-told family story involving his brothers using all the brylcream, leading Alby to try butter instead.
The Mount Riverview resident worked for Blue Mountains City Council for more than three decades as well as a couple of other local firms. He ran the raffles at the Lapstone Hotel to benefit Greystanes Children's Home for more than 30 years. He was also involved with the local fishing club and put in huge hours helping with Springwood and Lower Mountains Rugby League Clubs.
Alby leaves behind his beloved partner of 37 years, Glenis. Their relationship started with a day trip to Katoomba on a blind date. Alby wore a pink jumper which, despite the heat he wouldn't take off, afraid to reveal his tattoos. They updated to a Dire Straits concert for their next date and the rest was history
Alby was a loving father to five children and pop to 11 grand children, with number 12 on the way in December.
A very popular and generous character, Alby had a deep gruff voice and didn't suffer fools. He wasn't afraid to let you know his opinion but he gained respect as friends always knew where they stood with him. While it ran second to his devotion to Glenis and his family, Alby loved a beer and a yarn and was a well-recognised figure whether it be on a cruise or walking around England. In recent times the free spirit side of him surfaced with a love for visiting Lightning Ridge.
