Workshops for kids at Penrith

Penrith Regional Gallery is hosting a number of school holiday workshops and events this month.

Drawing in the garden on January 12. (10am-noon, 9-12 years, $35.) Explore plein air drawing outside, gathering inspiration from the Gallery's artist-designed garden whilst learning observational drawing techniques. Drawings will be combined and layered with prints created using natural materials.

Botanical sketches on January 13. (10am-noon, | 13-16 years, $35.) Take your drawing skills to the next level by working in the garden to develop large scale drawings on easels. Participants will explore the intricacies of plants and landscapes and be inspired to grow their own artistic styles.

Drawing with embroidery on January 17. (10am-noon, 13-16 years, $35.) Expand the way you draw in this workshop, where participants will take inspiration from the gallery's current exhibition A Tangled Bank and learn creative techniques to use fibres and textiles in artmaking.

Textured weaving on January 19. (10-11.30am, 5-8 years, $35.) Explore the colourful and textural world of fibre art in this fun and playful workshop where participants will visit the exhibition, A Tangled Bank, and create a weaving from yarn, textiles, natural and recycled materials.

Stitched mobiles on January 20. (10am-noon, 9-12 years, $35.) Create a beautiful hanging artwork from fibres, textiles and recycled materials by learning simple weaving and stitching techniques inspired by the artists in A Tangled Bank.

The Penrith Regional Gallery will also put on Pattern and Print: Easton Pearson Archive, a celebration of the internationally acclaimed Brisbane fashion house Easton Pearson. This free exhibition runs from January 22-April 17.

And check out some of the upcoming shows at The Joan in Penrith including Morning Melodies: Liverpool to London on January 11, celebrating a decade of 60s UK hits with Jacques Renay, Linda Knight, Kylie Reid and the Mersey Boys Quartet.

In February, enjoy The Spooky Men's Chorale (February 11-12), armed only with their voices, a sly collection of hats and facial hair, and a twinkle in the eye.

Also on February 11 is Ted Mulry Memories, a celebration of the iconic 70s singer and songwriter, with MC Glenn A Baker, and on February 19, Sydney's finest jazz and swing musicians come together to perform a sparkling repertoire of classics in the Mell-O-Tones.
