National ballroom and Latin dancing champions Marina Mihova and Clyde Gonsalves led the way at a fundraising ball last month for Blue Mountains Recreation and Respite Service (BMRRS), but the real stars of the night were the dancers with disabilities.
BMRRS manager Virginia Lanyon said the highlight of the Your Time to Shine Ball held at Mid Mountains Community Centre was seeing smiles on faces.
"About 50 people attended and the delight and excitement seen on the clients' faces when the dancing champions performed in their beautiful costumes was wonderful," she said.
"Their enjoyment of the dancing and enthusiasm in learning dance steps was evident and there were smiles all around.
"A big hit on the night were the raffle prize draws, made possible by donations by local businesses and the ball itself would not have been possible without our amazing volunteers.
"About $1500 was raised on the night which will go towards purchasing a new vehicle for our service."
The event followed successful yoga class and art workshops for clients in September.
BMRRS has operated in the Blue Mountains for more than 20 years, supporting people with disabilities to participate in their communities, build social connections, give families a break from their caring role and providing activities and outings for clients.
Upcoming activities include a spring barbecue and games day, a trip to see Phantom of the Opera and a star gazing visit to the observatory at the University of Western Sydney.
BMRRS is currently based at Braemar House in Springwood until the new Springwood Civic Centre opens in February and welcomes volunteers and new members.
