Call to support Springwood Sports Club

Last month the Gazette revealed the club, which served as the region's evacuation centre during the October 2013 bushfires, had been placed into voluntary administration as a result of 18 months of falling trade and spiralling legal costs.

The club is nearing the end of a two-year battle in the District Court with the builder of its clubhouse, Reed Constructions Australia Pty Ltd, currently in liquidation.

The case centres on an outstanding debt to Reed of $851,594 and a cross claim by the club over building defects evaluated at $1,271,902.

Greg Russell told the Gazette last Friday the club is trading as usual and still has plenty to offer members and guests.

"The club lost a lot of revenue after the bushfires so if we can start getting more people coming back to the club and using its facilities, the better it will be," Mr Russell said.

"I have [sent] a person up there to work on [developing more] promotions, events and other things to encourage more people to come... The core of the business is good, but the cost to build the new premises and the issues they've had with the building have created problems.

"We're calling on other registered clubs to see if they are interested in amalgamating or investing in the club, because the premises has its best value used as a club.

"This process is only in its early days."

Mr Russell said there was no window for the club to recover the money it believes it is owed over the building defects because "the chance of Reed Constructions coming back from liquidation is next to nothing".

"The court action will be ended, but it is the terms of that which will have to be reached and agreed on still," he said.

While not going into specifics about the damage, Mr Russell said some of the building's defects will need to be fixed sooner rather than later.

The matter is next due for mention at the District Court in Sydney on May 12.
