For the second game in a row, Blue Mountains Rugby Union club's first grade side pushed one of the competition heavyweights all the way but again came away on the wrong end of the scoreboard, going down 14-7 to Newport breakers at Porters Reserve.
The Blueys competed really well all day against a talented home team but the defending premiers were able to stay in front. Alex Pinson was once again on fire and was a popular recipient of the players player award but the best on the field on the day was skipper George Ftyginnias who was at his brilliant best all over the paddock and was a constant headache for Newport.
The seconds' slow start to the year continued, beaten 16-10 despite big games from Roy Tuisovivi, Dayne Nicholls and Peter DeMattia.
Thirds are yet to taste defeat, winning 17-12 with Chris Lukins without a doubt the star of the show. Fourths crashed 36-13, despite an awesome effort from Mat Osborne and some flashes of brilliance from the ageless Tom Pittman.
But the real stars of the day were the Colts. Despite missing a massive portion of their team to a Newcastle music event, the side led by yet another outstanding performance from the red hot Clancy Henderson kept their undefeated record intact with a 14-12 victory. While the score was close, in general play it was a different story as the Blueys young guns, with Henderson leading the way, always looked on top.
Senior rugby returns to Lapstone Oval on Saturday hosting the Hills club, with the fourth grade fixture at 10.45am kicking off proceedings.
