Blue Mountains residents are being given three options for the introduction of a green waste service.
Each household will have one vote and will choose between the options, two of which include a green bin.
A new green bin service across the city would come at a cost, additional to current residential rates.
"The Blue Mountains community has achieved an impressive 37 per cent reduction in the amount of waste that goes to landfill in the last decade, giving us another seven years of landfill life in the Blue Mountains," said Blue Mountains mayor Mark Greenhill (pictured).
"However, there is more work to be done. Once our landfill is full, residents will need to pay significantly more for our waste to be transported outside the city for disposal. One way to make our landfill last longer is to recycle more organics with a green bin."
The community consultation on a new green bin service follows an earlier consultation in 2014 where the community expressed an interest in a green bin. Since then, Blue Mountains City Council has continued to explore all possibilities of providing a more affordable green bin.
Information, detailing the cost, convenience and environmental benefits of all three options will be delivered to ratepayers and residents from Monday, July 6. It is also be available on www.bluemountainshaveyoursay.com.au/green-bin.
Residents are asked to review the information provided and decide which option their household would prefer and is willing to use and pay for. Submissions close on July 31.
Following the consultation, the results will be reported to the council for consideration. Any changes would apply to all households.
Council had not provided details of the options at the time of going to press.
