TWO adults and two children have been taken to hospital after a suspected gas explosion in the Manning Great Lakes on Saturday night.
About 6.40pm, police and emergency services were called to a caravan park on Reserve Road, Forster, following reports of an explosion inside one of the caravans.
Witnesses from neighbouring caravans extinguished the fire and rendered first aid to the family.
An 11-year-old boy and his 45-year-old father were airlifted by the Westpac Rescue helicopter to John Hunter Hospital with serious burns.
A 12-year-old boy and his 43-year-old mother were taken by ambulance paramedics to Manning Base Hospital for treatment of burns.
The children were transferred to the Children’s Hospital at Westmead for further treatment. The younger boy remains there in a stable condition, while his older brother has been released.
The parents have since been transferred to Royal North Shore Hospital.
None of the injuries are thought to be life-threatening in nature.
Once the area was deemed safe by Fire & Rescue NSW, police from Manning Great Lakes Local Area Command established a crime scene, which was examined by specialist forensic officers.
Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the explosion are continuing.
