Everyone has to start somewhere in life, and that includes Oscar nominated actor, Leonardo DiCaprio.
Rewind to when the Hollywood A-lister was a fresh-faced 19-year-old.
He worked with Johnny Depp on the 1993 release of What's Eating Gilbert Grape, a romantic drama in which DiCaprio plays Depp's younger brother with a developmental disability, Arnie.
According to People, Depp told the 31st annual Santa Barbara International Film Festival on Thursday that he was in a bad place at the time of filming and wasn't so nice to the up-and-coming, future Titanic star.
"It was a hard time for me, that film, for some reason. I don't know why," 52-year-old Depp said, adding, "I tortured him.
"I really did. He was always talking about these videos games, you know? I told you it was kind of a dark period. 'No, I will not give you a drag of my cigarette while you hide from your mother again, Leo.'"
Despite the Pirates of the Caribbean star revealing his irritation with DiCaprio, now 41, he admired the younger star for his solid work ethic.
"I'd say the absolute truth is that I respect Leo a lot. He worked really hard on that film and spent a lot of time researching. He came to set and he was ready to work hard and all his ducks were in a row."
Meanwhile, DiCaprio was oblivious to the torture, and has said he was just excited to work with Depp.
"I remember a lot of those moments on set like they were yesterday, especially working with people like De Niro and [Johnny] Depp at that age. It was like winning the lottery," said the star, who was nominated for an Academy Award for his role in the film.
Although Depp did not reveal the reasons why he was going through such a "hard time" in the "dark period" of his life during the 1993 movie, it was around the same time he split with his fiancee of three years, Winona Ryder.
The high-profile couple met at the Great Balls of Fire premiere and started dating two months later in 1989. They went on to appear in the 1990 film Edward Scissorhands together.
Ryder told Elle UK in 2009 that the split left her heartbroken and "depressed".
"I had just done Dracula and Edward Scissorhands. I had just had my first real break-up, the first heartbreak. I think it was really ironic because, like, everybody else just thought I had everything in the world, you know, I had no reason to be depressed, everything was sort of at its peak, but inside I was completely lost."
During the relationship, Depp had "Winona Forever" tattooed on his arm, which he later changed to "Wino Forever".
In 1994, Depp stepped out with model "it" girl, Kate Moss. Moss and Depp split several years later and Depp spent the next 14 years with French singer, Vanessa Paradis, the mother of his two children. Paradis and Depp split in 2012. Depp married American actress Amber Heard in 2015.
