The bells are a step closer to ringing again at St Hilda’s Anglican Church in Katoomba.
In April the church took delivery of three of six new bells to be installed in the bell tower which is being renovated.
The massive bells were made in England and shifting them is no easy feat.
“It took four men to move each of them,” said Reverend Ray Robinson. “And they are the smaller ones. The biggest fills a trailer.”
It’s been a slow process renovating the tower and gaining the funds for the bells, but thanks to community donations and partnering with the Australia and New Zealand Association of Bell-ringers, the church is another step closer to hearing them ring once again.
“I’m really glad St Hilda’s can make a contribution to the community,” he said.
The church is still accepting donations from the community for the renovation of the bell tower, and some donors may like to have a plaque in memory of a family member placed in the tower.
The church is also looking to train bellringers at a church in Lithgow. To learn how to do it properly takes about a year, Reverend Robinson said.
