The Blue Mountains Roller Derby League (BMRDL) Travel Team – the Free Sisters – travelled to Adelaide over the June long weekend to compete in The Great Southern Slam (TGSS).
TGSS, the world’s largest roller derby tournament, saw 43 teams from Australia and New Zealand converge on Adelaide Showgrounds for three days of hard hitting roller derby action.
The first day of competition saw the Free Sisters up against The Rough Cuts from Diamond Valley Roller Derby Club in Victoria. An intense first half saw the teams neck and neck at half time. The second half saw the Rough Cuts pull ahead to win with 268 points to the Free Sisters’ 148 in what was a physically tough bout.
In an early start on the second day the Free Sisters took on the Cabernet Savages from Margaret River Roller Derby. The Free Sisters lead this fast paced bout from early on and kept their collective cool to win 161-100.
The win against the Savages wasn’t enough to put the Free Sisters through to the next round but the one win/one loss result was an improvement on their last TGSS and they look forward to going for two wins and some finals action at TGSS 2018.
BMRDL has a new skater info session on Monday, July 4 at 7.15pm before their fifth birthday scrimmage. For more info contact freshmeat@bluemountainsrollerderby.com.
