An art exhibition set to open in Blackheath hopes to challenge people's views on the environment and sustainability.
Utopia Dream, featuring nine contemporary female artists who either live or have lived in the Blue Mountains, opens at Day Fine Art on October 8.
Curator and artist Louisa Clayton from Katoomba says the theme is about imagining a future that's a positive one, that's concerned about social and environmental issues and doesn't involve devastation.
"We want to raise awareness of environmental issues ... but being positive, imagining a decent future and putting energy into that rather than being pessimistic," she said.
What began as a fantasy of a post apocalyptic Utopia turned into a visual meditation, exploration and manifestation of what could be.
Clayton is exhibiting paintings, soft sculpture and video art, and says her works are "centred around fostering more respect for women and the environment".
The other artists will also be exhibiting sculpture, fibre art, illustration and printmaking, and came together earlier this year to dream up a theme for the show, with many sharing similar concerns for the state of the world.
Also exhibiting are: Claire Nakazawa, Kevina-Jo Smith, Grace Wood, Mie Nakazawa, Anna Herold Pola, Elly Devery, Dagni Cadiogan and Ireni Clarke.
Opening night is on October 8 from 6-9pm, and the exhibition runs until October 23.
