COOCHIEMUDLO Island resident Helen Turner has had the experience of a lifetime kayaking with whales in Moreton Bay.
Ms Turner was with a friend kayaking from Peel Island on Thursday when they came across the whales.
She said they watched at least seven of the mammals for about an hour.
“It felt like a life-changing experience to have them around us,” she said.
Ms Turner said the kayakers were approaching the channel where they had to wait for the North Stradbroke ferry to come across when they saw the first two whales near Horseshoe Bay.
“It was perfect timing.”
Ms Turner, who works for Brisbane Yacht Charters and has lived on Coochie for more than 15 years, said it is the first year so many whales had been seen in the bay.
“In previous years, we have seen a mother and a calf in the bay, but this year it’s like they are doing a lap around Peel Island,” she said.
