TWO people have been killed in an horrific head-on crash north of Tamworth.
Emergency services rushed to the scene on the New England Highway, about 30km south of Uralla, about 4.30pm Wednesday after reports of a serious collision.
The Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service tasked its Newcastle and Tamworth-based choppers to the accident after initial reports suggested three people had been injured, but the Hunter helicopter was called off enroute.
A NSW Police spokesman confirmed two people had been killed at the scene.
Police said a man behind the wheel of a Subaru, believed to be aged in his 20s, died at the scene.
The male driver of the other vehicle, a Toyota, died at the scene. He is believed to be aged in his 40s.
Ambulance paramedics treated a 25-year-old man, a passenger in the Subaru, who was trapped in the wreckage.
It’s believed he suffered leg and pelvic injuries and was transported to Tamworth hospital by road ambulance in a serious condition.
The crash shut the highway in both directions for several hours as New England detectives and crime scene officers combed the road to try and determine what caused the crash.
Traffic was diverted around the scene via Walcha on the Oxley Highway and Thunderbolts Way.
A report will now be prepared for the coroner.
