Robin Shannon from Kedumba Urban Farm in Katoomba has received the first small producer grant from Slow Food Blue Mountains – a cheque for $2,200.
The small producer grant programs targets small, sustainable, start-up producers, said convivium leader, Anne Elliott.
“We are delighted to assist Robin by providing funding for his mushroom farm, which will use waste collected from local cafes and restaurants. Eventually, Robin will use the spent substrate for the production of high value herbs and vegetables.
“Specifically, the $2,200 grant will help Robin to establish a grow room and fruiting chamber,” Ms Elliott said.
Mr Shannon also plans to host a series of workshops in the Mountains to enable local residents to use their garden waste to cultivate mushrooms outdoors. The first workshop is scheduled for February 23 in collaboration with Toolo, the Blue Mountains Tool Library.
Slow Food Blue Mountains invites applications from other small producers interested in receiving financial assistance. The application form can be downloaded at www.slowfoodbluemountains.com.au.
Pianola soirees with potluck suppers conducted by Slow Food Blue Mountains in the cooler months raise funds for the small producer grant program, Ms Elliott said. For more information, check out the website or email sfbm@slowfoodaustralia.com.au.
