Pink Mountains Youth will host the second annual dance party in Katoomba on Sunday, June 11.
Called The Glitter Gala, the alcohol and drug free event provides a safe space for young lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, same-sex attracted, non-heterosexual and questioning people to meet and socialise.
“Despite the internet and a more open-minded society, it’s important for young people to connect in person,” said Jonathan Llewellyn, a facilitator of Pink Mountains Youth.
“Having friends outside of school environment but within your community takes away any sense of isolation, loneliness or feeling like you don’t fit in.”
Pink Mountains Youth is a safe space environment for young LGBTQISSA+ people from the Blue Mountains. It meets monthly at the Katoomba Youth Centre and monthly at the Springwood Youth Centre. It is run by volunteers from the community and supported through a partnership between Mountains Youth Services Team (MYST) and Pink Mountains.
“Our monthly get togethers in Katoomba and Springwood are great and well attended, but The Glitter Gala will allow for a really fun night,” said Mr Llewellyn.
Pink Mountains Youth has been supported by various fundraising events including Alphabet Soup, a community picnic and by Mount Vic Flicks which hosted Eurovision Song Contest screenings for the last two years.
Pink Mountains Youth – Katoomba runs on the last Tuesday of each month at the Katoomba Youth Centre. Pink Mountains Youth – Springwood runs on the second Tuesday of each month at the Springwood Youth Centre.
The Glitter Gala will take place at the Katoomba Leura Community Centre (in front of the Coles building) on Katoomba Street, Katoomba from 7-10pm. Entry is $10. Soft drink and snacks will be available.
