St Canice’s Catholic Primary School Katoomba has again created an amazing exhibition linking the arts with writing.
“If there is an audience and purpose for creating an artistic piece, students excel. The same is said for writing. Students will produce amazing written work if there is a purpose for their writing and an audience,” said the school principal Mr Geerligs.
The exhibition officially opened on Sunday 17th June with the students performing in front of a packed crowd. Students played string orchestral pieces such as La Bamba and Ode to Joy. The choir sang and the drama group performed a play called “Under the Sea Down Under”.
The theme for the Sculptures at School exhibition for 2017 is Save our Seas. The students have been exploring the topics of The Great Pacific Garbage Swirl, and sustainability and how from our throw-away society, we can not only turn waste into incredible works of art but also reduce our impact on our seas.
Year 5 and Year 6 students decorated old shoes and wrote stories about the impact these shoes have made on this land and our waterways.
Year 3 and Year 4 explored the issue of protecting our turtles in the ocean.
Year 1 and Year 2 created thought provoking writing related the gully and the effect the Catalina Raceway had on the aboriginal settlement and water supply.
The exhibition is open until Friday 23rd June at St Canice’s Catholic Primary School, 156 Katoomba St, Katoomba.
