A team of Blue Mountains Grammar School students will represent NSW in the national final of the prestigious Formula 1 in Schools competition.
Year 9 students Balint Boda, Rohan Grant-Dawes, William Hedges, Finnian O’Connor and Peter Young –competing under the name, Clutch Control – were named NSW Development Class Champions at the state finals held at Western Sydney University in October.
F1 in Schools is the world’s largest school based Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) competition and requires students to design, build and race a miniature F1 car. The national titles will be held in Tasmania in March 2018.
In addition to their first placing, Clutch Control also received awards for fastest lap, fastest grand prix, knockout champions, best engineered, best engineered CAD, best manufactured car and the innovation award.
A second team from Blue Mountains Grammar won best marketing and an encouragement award at the state titles. Called Streamline Racing, the team included Charlie Campbell, Joshua Gale, Hayley Morgan, Sebastian Mannes and Lily Thomas.
This is the third time in just three years that a Blue Mountains Grammar School team has competed in the state finals.
Design and Technology teacher, Michael Laws, said “to have our two teams do so well in the NSW state final is testament to the amazing potential of our students and the expertise of our staff”.
“The students’ participation in such opportunities allows them to develop their thinking skills and discover the talents they each possess.”
