Blue Mountains Water Polo club will host their first NSW Country Districts competition on December 2-3.
About 100 water polo players representing NSW country clubs and a few from Victoria, will converge on Glenbrook pool to take part in the open level competition.
“We were previously never big enough to host it. Since Parramatta pool shut they were looking for somewhere central. We’re hoping to get it every year if we can snag it,” said Blue Mountains Water Polo Club president Ben Morgan.
“We’re trialling the opens and down the track maybe we’ll get the juniors competition too.”
The club boasts a membership of 80, and are working hard to build up their juniors who play in a Sydney metro competition on Sundays. A social competition is held on Wednesday nights at Glenbrook in summer, and in winter they move to Ripples Leisure Centre at St Marys.
“Being in the water is great in summer,” Mr Morgan said.
“There’s also the team element, and keeping fit with treading water.”
Blue Mountains will field a 13-man squad in the NSW Country Districts competition, and Mr Morgan expects Central Coast and Newcastle to dominate the tournament.
A NSW Country team will be selected after these championships to contest the Australian Country Championships next year.
Mr Morgan has played water polo for 16 years and made the NSW Country team at least four times.
Spectators are welcome to watch the championships at Glenbrook pool on December 2 and 3.
