A large tree on the highway at Blackheath has been spared, after the community rallied around to save it from removal during roadworks.
The Roads and Maritime Service had initially wanted to cut down a number of trees near the corner of the highway and Govetts Leap Rd/Bundarra St.
But in its latest community update, it reported that an assessment by an arborist “determined all the trees at the intersection should be able to be retained”.
Michael Paag, from the highway action group, said it was a good result.
“We are very pleased with it, particularly the fact that we have been able to save the tree,” he said.

The RMS report said it had mapped the roots of the existing trees at the intersection and all should be able to be retained, though some may have to be trimmed. An arborist will make the final decision when excavation work starts.
Mr Paag said the whole community, including the chamber of commerce and the alliance, had worked on lobbying the RMS.
“We’ll now work together to minimise the impact as far as possible during construction,” he said.
