Ryan Hackney closes in on Matthew Wade’s cricket record

Faulconbridge cricketer Ryan Hackney is fast closing in on Australian and Tasmanian cricket star Matthew Wade's record at the Under 19 National Championships.

On Wednesday Ryan’s total was 1083, just shy of Wade’s record of 1091 runs at domestic Under 19 level.

In this tournament he has scored 361 runs at a 72 average.

Ryan’s dad Peter, had been watching his son at the championships in Hobart playing for NSW Metro, and said he hoped to break the record on Friday (December 15) when they took on Cricket Australia XI in the grand final.

“He’s been hitting the ball well and feeling confident,” Peter said. “Fingers crossed he can do it.”

Ryan was also gunning for Australian selection in the ICC Under 19 Cricket World Cup side to be announced in the next few days.

The 18-year-old left-handed opener has juggled studying for his HSC with heavy cricket commitments.

“He just wants to play cricket,” Peter said. “Ryan works extremely hard, that’s all he wants to do. He puts a lot of hours and a lot of time in.”
