Mediterranea is the 14th solo exhibition by Dr Leonarda Kovacic, Katoomba-based photographic artist, historian, tutor, lecturer and curator.
The exhibition presents a selection of Mediterranean motifs from the Croatian island of Iz, evoking the characteristic landscape, pristinely clear waters, traditional architecture, and island flora and wildlife.
"The images have been taken over the many years during which I enjoyed the island’s beautiful, unspoilt environment, inhaling the fragrance of native flowers, the clear views of other islands, the warm boulders pressed against my skin, the wild plants on my plate and palate, and the soothing, aromatic herbs in my evening tea cups," said Kovacic.
"The water-shaped dolomite and limestone create a natural backdrop against which the bright colours of flowers and man-made objects stand out.
“Everything on this island depends on these rocks: houses, dry stone walls, gnarled grapevines and olive trees, shelters for native animals as well as my photography as the strong sunlight reflects from stony formations and makes images crispy bright and infused with the authentic atmosphere of the Mediterranean."
The exhibition opens on Saturday, March 3 at 2pm, and will include rare historical documentary footage of the island with traditional male a cappella singing. The exhibition can be viewed at the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Heritage Gallery, Govetts Leap Rd, Blackheath, from Monday to Sunday, 9am-4pm. The exhibition is free and suitable for all ages.
