Mount Vic Flicks will host the best of Queer Screen’s 25th Mardi Gras Film Festival with five films showing from April 6-8.
A blossoming friendship leads to a “will they, won’t they?” in a comedy about friendship and bacteria. In Sensitivity Training, Australian actress Anna Lise Phillips stars as Dr Serena Wolfe – a ruthless misanthropic microbiologist, whose wit and boundless negativity sends people scurrying. But when Serena’s venomous wit results in the death of a colleague, it falls to bubbly and optimistic Caroline to provide the sensitivity training Serena needs. Screening Friday, April 6 at 8pm.
A must-see collection of LGBTQI shorts, Best of MGFF18 Shorts addresses many varied and complex themes from up and coming and established filmmakers. It screens Saturday, April 7 at 6pm.
The Untold Tales of Armistead Maupin paints a vivid picture of queer life in San Francisco during the 70s and 80s. Joined by his many friends – including Sir Ian McKellan, Olympia Dukakis and Laura Linney – this hilarious and moving documentary sheds new light on Maupin’s work, and on the warmth and generosity of the author himself. On April 7 at 8pm.
Miley Cyrus, Katy Perry, Shakira and more star in Die Beautiful ... or at least their likeness, as portrayed by Filipino superstar Paolo Ballesteros. Trish Echevarria (Ballesteros) is a gorgeous transgender beauty queen whose dying wish is to be dressed as a different celebrity for each day of her wake. This heartfelt film weaves together the conflicts the transgender community faces in the Philippines, while also delivering a fun and colourful look at LGBTQI life in the Philippines. It screens Sunday, April 8 at 4pm.
A clever, poignant, honest drama about same-sex marriage, The Ring Thing follows Sarah on her quest to make sense of her aversion to marrying her partner. Using interviews with real couples, the playful style will hook you from start to finish as this couple navigate their way through commitment and what it means for them. This film is a graceful and engaging way of exploring marriage and commitment. On April 8 at 6pm.
