Springwood swimmer Matt Wilson has earned a place in the finals of the 200m breaststroke at the Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast, qualifying second fastest.
Wilson led his heat on Thursday (April 5), at times a full body length in front, and hit the wall in 2:09:74.
“It’s the fastest heat swim I’ve ever done,” the 19-year-old said after the race.
“I’ve been improving, little steps every time I race. It’s definitely a boost to the confidence seeing that I can keep improving.”
Men’s 200m breaststroke defending Commonwealth Games champion Ross Murdoch from Scotland was the fastest qualifier, leading all the way in his heat to finish a second faster than Wilson.
“Ross just had a very quick heat swim there 2:08:77, so he’s going to be very tough to knock off but I will give it my best crack I guess,” Wilson said.
The former Winmalee High Student competes in the finals at 9.45pm on Thursday.
