The police operation started about 4pm after an elderly resident in the street found explosives in her shed.
The material was believed to be a 70-year-old box of explosives - "two sticks of gelignite and fuses in poor condition" left by a previous owner, according to a police spokesman.
Residents in nearby Sunnyside Avenue and parts of Henderson Road were also evacuated as a precautionary measure and police, fire and ambulance were all on standby. The Police Rescue and Bomb Squads did a controlled burn of the explosives and the street was declared safe by 6.30pm.
