Pulses were racing at the Sydney Opera House on August 13 when Blue Mountains students - including 49 from Winmalee High School - starred in the NSW Department of Education's public schools performing arts concert called Pulse.
Winmalee High School's contingent of talent featured school captain and marimba soloist Simon Shead (who appeared on the concert's official promotional poster) and guitar soloist Harry Kadi who played a complex composition called Libertango in front of a live audience of 2000 people.
Six of the school's students from Years 10, 11 and 12 performed Sting's song Fields of Gold, 16 students were part of Pulse's 700-strong massed choir and 25 students joined orchestras and ensembles performing throughout the evening.
Head of music at Winmalee High School, Craig McGown, said the students put in extra hours of weekly rehearsals since February and were thrilled that all that hard work paid off on the Sydney Opera House stage.
"Planning for next year's Pulse will already begin for us in a few weeks," Mr McGown said.
Students from Springwood, Blaxland, Katoomba and Nepean High Schools and Faulconbridge, Winmalee, Ellison, Blaxland East, Glenbrook Public Schools also performed at the Pulse concert.
Pulse provides opportunities for students from NSW public schools to perform in a major annual arts event at the Sydney Opera House.
Participants also get to experience the discipline of a professional production and extend and enhance their skills by working with other talented performing arts students and professional artists, directors and producers.
