Penrith Mayor Karen McKeown announced the winners of the 2016 Youth Mayor Competition at the Penrith Civic Centre last week.
The Youth Mayor competition is an opportunity for local secondary school students from years 7 to 9 to learn more about local government, leadership and democracy.
The theme of the 2016 competition was Penrith as the Adventure Capital of NSW. Students were asked to describe what they thought would be their best adventure in Penrith. They could describe it in any creative medium, such as a report, a cartoon or an artwork.
Cr McKeown said the applications were a reflection of the wonderful talent and innovativeness of our youth across the City.
“The entries we received for the competition were outstanding and it was a tough decision to select the three winners,” she said.
The youth mayor who was selected for 2016 is Billie Kuczynski from Cranebrook High School, with the two deputy mayors being Niamh O’Keefe from Emmaus Catholic College and Alannah Hader from Caroline Chisholm College.
The youth mayor and deputy mayors will be invited to attend the council ordinary meeting in July to address the councillors and to attend a number of Penrith City Council events over the next year.
