Ward 2 Greens candidate Brent Hoare has called for the establishment of a rainbow crossing in Lawson to celebrate and affirm values of acceptance, diversity and pride in the Blue Mountains community.
“We need to encourage more community discussion of a broad range of issues, like reconciliation with indigenous people, marriage equality, the need for acceptance of safe schools, multiculturalism, true respect for women, and taking a standing against violence,” Mr Hoare said.
“We are known for being a colourful and progressive community, and a rainbow crossing would be a symbolic and inexpensive way for Blue Mountains City Council to reinforce its support for inclusion.”
Mr Hoare said that a rainbow crossing in Lawson would bring many benefits to a township often overlooked by visitors heading to the Upper Mountains.
He added: “There are some magnificent walks and new eateries in Lawson but few visitors get to know about them. The rainbow crossing would entice people to stop and then explore the area. A map of the walks near the crossing would help enormously.”
Rebecca Chippington from Lawson restaurant Native Kitchen and Bar said: “We think having a rainbow crossing in Lawson would be a tremendous way to encourage visitors to the Mountains to take a break, get a photo and support local businesses.”
Mr Hoare said: “I hope that over time the rainbow crossing will come to mean many things to many people, and will help stimulate discussion about who we are, what we stand for, and what we expect for our community. It will help to promote the importance of showing respect, understanding, inclusivity, and celebration of diversity.
“I would like to invite expressions of support for a rainbow crossing in Lawson from across the community, and to encourage a sense of ownership from as broad a range of community members as possible.
“One can only imagine the variety of fabulous digitally augmented reality creatures that would be drawn to such an iconic location.”
