The Seniors Week event will see seniors reflect on a whole range of subjects from antique doll collections and experiences of political upheaval in Latvia through to the life affirming qualities of journaling and finding your artistic expression at 70 years old.
As well as young people from local Blaxland High School the event is open to community members.
“For as long as humans have been around, older people have played critically important roles as advice-givers and survival in pre-literate societies was dependent on the knowledge of the oldest members,” said project co-ordinator Niki Read.
“It is only recently that people have turned to anyone other than the oldest person they know to solve life’s problems. Older people are still a unique source of intelligence about living for younger people and the community, and we need to tap this source much more vigorously than we are currently doing. We need to open up spaces where older people are listened to and valued for their unique perspective”.
You can catch the Lower Mountains elders at the Surprising Lives event on Wednesday, March 8 from 12.30–2.30pm at the Blaxland Community Centre, Hope Street, Blaxland. Call 4739 1164 to book.
