Lawson Skate Park has been given a makeover thanks to a $5000 state government Community Building Partnership grant.

Community groups including the Hazelbrook Association and the Mid Mountains Neighbourhood Centre raised concerns about graffiti.The skirting around the site now has a “funky” Street Art Murals Australia [SAMA] work completed by Janne Birkner and Scott Nagy, who also worked on the 10 metre high Wentworth Falls water tank mural, one of about eight projects the aerosal artists have completed in the Mountains in the past two years.
Danielle Wilding Forbes said MMNC worked with five community partners and skaters to improve the space. Meanwhile Blue Mountains Council has indicated they were open to extending the park surface at one end by 1m to enable skaters can stop more safely.
Park user 12-year-old Xavier Smith, said he and his friends “love it ... love the colours”.
Part of the design brief was to ensure the park looked better from the highway. The work was completed in mid May.
SAMA co-ordinator Emilly Pettit said while the artists were now doing much larger works interstate but their “hearts were in the Mountains”.
