It’s a classic case of taking your work home with you.
Woodford librarian Carole Dent has started what is believed to be the first street library in the Blue Mountains – a US concept that allows people to browse, borrow or leave books in their own neighborhood
Ms Dent first heard about the idea (called Little Free Libraries in the US) a few years ago, and recently attended a workshop about starting them locally.
The Blue Mountains library is located on the hill in Oakura Avenue, Woodford. It is registered with Street Libraries, as the movement is called in Australia.
“The books don’t even have to be returned to the library, they can be passed on to friends if you like,” said Ms Dent.
“They encourage love of literature and community spirit. You don’t have to spend a lot or even attend a workshop, though they are great fun. Street libraries can be made from materials you have lying around. The fun part is decorating – the Oakura Avenue library celebrates the heritage of the area with a representation of the concentric circles rock carvings on Woodford ridge and the Oakura Estate in 1905,” she said.
“So if you are on your way to Woodford Station or just taking a stroll, stop by and check it out.”
