Grant Brechney was prepared to go the distance in a bid to win his recent Light Heavyweight East Coast Championship title fight in Lithgow.
It turned out he only needed two minutes.
The Leura native, and now martial arts teacher in Leura, Bathurst and Penrith, managed to defeat opponent Mat Moore via submission (triangle) in the opening round of the fight held in May.
“I was prepared to go the five rounds with him, and that would have been the longest I’d have ever gone. To get the finish in less than two minutes was amazing,” Brechney said.
“I tried to take him down after he tried to rush me against the cage, but he reversed my take down.
“I managed to get into the side control position and prevented him from standing up.”
Victory was especially satisfying for Brechney after a difficult lead up to the title fight.
“I’d injured my leg in the week before the fight quite badly,” he said.
“On the night I was feeling ready, but was a bit nervous. It was the highest profile fight I’ve had so far.
“I have to thank my corner for shouting out instructions and keeping my head in the game.”
Brechney’s next fight is the MASA [Martial Arts Sports Association’s] Australian Light Heavyweight tittle on August 12 in Liverpool. He will represent Blue Mountains Martial Arts Centre where he has been training.
