The risk of fire in winter isn’t at the forefront of people’s minds, but it should be, say Fire and Rescue NSW firefighters who have launched a statewide campaign to ‘keep looking when cooking’ to avoid kitchen fire catastrophes.

In the Blue Mountains alone, Fire and Rescue NSW recorded 32 residential fires in 2016 with a flame or heat source left unattended as a contributing cause.
Less than two weeks ago firefighters responded to a fire in a Faulconbridge which caused substantial smoke damage to the home after the oven was left on.
“If you’re cooking, stay with what you are cooking, don’t walk out,” said Springwood station officer Ian Sargeant.
“Turn everything off before you leave the house.”
Springwood firefighters urged Blue Mountains residents to keep a fire blanket and a dry powder fire extinguisher near the kitchen.
