Councillors last night voted to support the “yes” case in the marriage equality plebiscite.
The mayor, Mark Greenhill, who moved the minute, said it was a matter of “human rights” that same sex couples should have the right to marry.
The vote was passed 8-0 after three of the Liberals councillors – Brendan Christie, Chris Van der Kley and Kevin Schreiber – left the room during the vote. All three said it was a personal matter rather than an issue for local government. (The fourth Liberal councillor, Daniel Myles, was not at the meeting.)
A large audience of gay and lesbian people, their families and supporters, applauded council after the vote.
