Leura resident Mr Mills, who stood for the Voluntary Euthanasia Party in the 2015 state election, said while the legislation should be introduced into the Upper House today by Nationals MLC Trevor Khan, he didn’t expect debate to happen until November.
“So I’m hoping people get motivated to write to MLCs between now and then,” he said.
The bill is a cross-party effort, which Mr Mills hopes will be received better than an earlier attempt four years ago.
“The 2013 bill lost because it was put up by a Green and none of the conservatives voted for it,” he said.
The current bill, on the other hand, has been a cross party effort. It is the product of two years’ consultation by a working group consisting of Mr Khan, Liberal MP Lee Evans, Labor MLC Lynda Voltz, Greens MLC Mehreen Faruqi and independent MP Alex Greenwich.
Mr Mills, a retired public servant, became became involved with the Dying with Dignity movement in about 2009, eventually ending up as president of the NSW branch.
