On the back of a strong performance in the Australian Boomers' Asian Cup winning team, Angus Brandt will compete in the first two games of Australia’s FIBA World Cup qualifiers.
The Springwood native was one of 12 chosen, but the broader squad of 24 remains in contention to be selected for future games in the qualifying process.
The Boomers will take on Chinese Taipei on November 24, then Japan in Adelaide three days later.
“I’m very proud to be named in the team. It’s always an honour to play for your country,” Brandt said.
He was excited about the upcoming games, having played both teams in Lebanon during the Asian Cup.
“I’m sure they’ll be tougher now that we’ve played them, so I’m looking forward to the challenge,” the 27-year-old said.
“I’m anticipating Japan to be the tougher of the two, simply because of what they brought to the table last time we played them.”
Qualifying games will be held in Australia and overseas over the next 16 months, as the Boomers take their first steps towards the 2019 FIBA World Cup.
Brandt enjoys competing internationally. “I like that I can experience different cultures and see other parts of the world while playing a game I love,” he said.
Combining Boomers commitments with his second season with the Perth Wildcats, the centre has a strong presence on the court, and some great numbers at 11.8 points and 4.8 rebounds a game.
