Penrith Symphony Orchestra is excited to present its 30th anniversary season in 2018.
For three decades, the ensemble has been an integral and pioneering part of musical life in the west.
Season 2018 will be a celebration of the ensemble’s rich history over the years, but also looks to the future, continuing PSO’s reputation for programming diverse and engaging concerts and events for all tastes.
Chief conductor and artistic director, Paul Terracini, said: “I am very much looking forward to directing what will be one of our most exciting seasons ever. It is a season not to be missed.”
The transcendent and timeless Mozart Requiem opens the year, with the orchestra joined by soloists, Penrith City Choir, Warrimoo Choral and Academy Singers.
In a nod to the historic significance of 2018, PSO will perform a 30th Anniversary Gala Concert featuring Rachmaninov’s famous and much loved Piano Concerto No.2, a work presented in PSO’s very first concert performance. Exceptional Australian virtuoso, Michael Kieren Harvey, will join the orchestra as soloist.
Dvorak’s audience favourite 9th New World Symphony will appear alongside Brahms’ monumental 1st Piano Concerto.
In a season of highlights, an opera concert will showcase musical jewels including excerpts from West Side Story and The Sound Of Music.
And Mozart reappears when Sydney Symphony musicians and sisters, Marina and Justine Marsden, appear as soloists in the Sinfonia Concertante for Violin and Viola.
The dynamic and energetic George Ellis returns to the PSO, conducting the popular toddler prom concerts in ‘Musical Opposites’.
Underlining the orchestra’s commitment to the future, new music and emerging artists, 2018 will see the premiere of several new compositions throughout the season. These will include the winner of the PSO young composer award, and works from Western Sydney University composition students.
Next year will also see the inauguration of the Penrith Youth Orchestra, an initiative that has grown from the highly successful Penrith Strings program. PSO is proud to work in collaboration with the Australian Chamber Orchestra and The Joan in this wonderful venture.
