It has been a great year at Varuna.
The house, which recently received a facelift with a fresh coat of autumn-yellow paint, has been home to more than 200 writers throughout the year.
At Springwood’s Community & Theatre Hub, Bob Brown delivered the Mick Dark Talk for the Future to a packed audience, and the writers’ festival attracted audiences to the Carrington Hotel.
In 2018, thanks to funding from the Blue Mountains City of the Arts Trust, Varuna will establish a young writers’ program for Mountains high school students, due to kick off in February.
The program is for nominated students in Years 10, 11 or 12, and will run on three workshop days in the first half of 2018.
Another highlight will be a course on untaming the writing mind. This four-week course will explore ways of abandoning the writing-ego and learning how to allow writing to take shape organically, from the inside out. Facilitated by award-winning poet and Varuna consultant Vanessa Kirkpatrick, it will be held on Sundays, February 4, 11 and 18 and March 4. Each workshop runs from 2-4pm and will be held at Varuna. Places are limited.
