Jackson Sharp has broken a 10-year-old record.
The Wentworth Falls runner smashed four seconds from the NSW under 18s mile record set by James Kaan at 4:09:22.
Sharp, 17, clocked in at 4:05:13, in the race run at Bankstown’s Crest Athletic Track on December 23.
Competing in the men’s open grade, Sharp placed sixth.
“I was racing a lot of fast guys in that race,” he said.
“It pushes me to run faster.”
Sharp said he was hoping to run as close to four minutes as possible, and didn’t learn he’d broken the record until the following day.
“It’s a pretty cool thing. I’m obviously happy about it,” he said.
The Albie Thomas Mile is named after the runner and Olympian born in Hurstville, whose best mile time was 3:58:3.
Sharp now turns his attention to the Australian Junior Athletics Championships in Sydney in March, where he hopes to qualify in the 1500m, 800m and 5000m, so he has a chance at representing Australia in the world juniors in Finland in July.
