Council has endorsed all 10 of the recommendations made by the man appointed to investigate asbestos mishandling claims.
Michael Tooma has given council an interim report about management of asbestos at Lawson carpark, the Mechanics Institute and the Lawson depot.
The report itself has not yet been made public but the recommendations have. At the council meeting last Tuesday night, councillors voted to accept all of them.
They include developing a policy to make sure any contaminated sites are cleaned up quickly, asbestos management training for all staff and a review of middle management to see that it can properly supervise staff to ensure their health and safety.
The mayor, Mark Greenhill, said while there was “still a way to go with the final steps”, Mr Tooma had presented a “very comprehensive report” and the recommendations should be adopted “without any delay”.
