Tonight as you sleep, shooters will be out with their spotlights and guns terrorising, killing and maiming our beloved national icon. This happens every night across the country and here in the Blue Mountains.
Kangaroo imagery is everywhere; on our coat of arms, the logo of our national airline, the name of our national rugby league and soccer teams and of course the boxing kangaroo mascot which is instantly recognised across the globe. Despite the ubiquity of the kangaroo in popular culture and commerce, most people are unaware of the war that is constantly being waged against their very existence. We slaughter millions of kangaroos each year.
Kangaroo, A Love Hate Story documents Australia’s fractured relationship with one of the world’s most iconic animals.
A large part of the movie was filmed in the Mountains and features two inspirational locals, Greg Keightley and Dianne Smith. They moved to the Mountains with dreams of establishing an eco friendly accommodation business; this dream was quickly destroyed as they were terrorised nightly by shooters slaughtering kangaroos on their property.
The film also charts the growth and success of the Animal Justice Party.
This award winning film is a must see for all Australians. First screening in New York, LA across the USA and now Europe, Australians now have the opportunity to see the film.
It confronts Australian audiences with our national shame; we are the only nation on Earth that wages war with its national emblem and the national kangaroo hunt is the largest commercial slaughter of land-based wildlife on the planet.
Mt Vic Flicks will be screening the film from May 3-9. On Saturday, May 5, join Smith and Keightley and the film’s producer, Michael McIntyre, for a Q&A. And on Sunday, May 6, The Hon Mark Pearson will be hosting a Q&A. More details contact Chris Parker, Blue Mountains regional group, bluemountains.ajp@gmail.com. Or see mtvicflicks.com.au.
