The Blue Mountains Regional Business Chamber is working with small businesses and local organisations to ensure that they are aware of, and prepared for, the July deadline for new privacy protection laws around the handling of customer information.
Mark Barton, president of the chamber, said Europe was implementing new data privacy protection clauses that will affect all kinds of businesses and organisations in Australia.
Businesses holding customer information of any sort such as membership directories, email addresses, financial information etc will be affected.
Lawyer Katherine Hawes said recent developments in law and legislation have made sure that data sharing is no longer possible among business owners. Every business should now adopt processes that are transparent in handling information.

The chamber is hosting an event on the issue at the Mountain Heritage Hotel in Katoomba on June 6 at 6.15pm where Ms Hawes will outline what businesses need to do to become compliant.
