It’s another case of Blue Mountains Musical Society links spreading far and wide.
Four members of the cast in Packemin Productions’ Legally Blonde the Musical which opens at Riverside Theatres, Parramatta later this month have worked together on Blue Mountains Musical Society productions.
Jacqui Dwyer said she’d worked with Jenna Woolley in her first society production in 2014 of the musical Cats, with Tonieka del Rosario in West Side Story in 2016 and David Tucker had been making sure the microphones in the society’s productions were well adjusted for years.
In her first musical post-HSC, 19-year-old Dwyer is looking forward to getting back on the stage.
She plays the role of Whitney, in the musical she describes as fresh, “with a youthful twist.”
“It’s really modern. More than ever it relates to our generation and the struggles that you go through – wanting to be accepted, wanting to be known in the world and discover who you are, trying to work out who you are,” Dwyer said.
Based on the novel and the hit-movie of the same name, Legally Blonde chronicles the journey of the perky Elle Woods, a fashion savvy, sorority girl who appears to have it all. But when her boyfriend Warner dumps her for someone 'serious', Elle uses her charm to get into Harvard Law School in an attempt to win him back, in the process learning that it's so much better to be smart.
Since finishing her final year of schooling at Nepean Creative and Performing Arts High School last year, Springwood-based Dwyer has been keen to make her way in the wide world of performing arts.
The Gazette spoke to her from Perth, where she was attending a workshop at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA).
“I’m learning a lot about musical theatre and rehearsal. I’m getting to know the campus and the teachers,” she said.
Dwyer, who is currently working two jobs, will audition for a place at WAAPA later this year. She also hopes to have her own solo cabaret show ready to go by the end of the year.
Last year she was selected to take on a vocalist role in Schools Spectacular.
“It [Schools Spectacular] gave me a lot of experience getting into a professional zone preparing for performances,” Dwyer said.
Legally Blonde the Musical runs from July 27 - August 11 at Riverside Theatres, Parramatta. Tickets at https://riversideparramatta.com.au.
