Twenty netballers from the Blue Mountains have been invited to play in the International Netball Festival in Fiji in December.
An under 15s team from Lapstone/Glenbrook Netball Club will attend, as well as an under 13s team from Springwood Netball Club.
The girls will play at least seven teams from around Australia, New Zealand and Fiji in the three days of competition.
Jenni Tomkins, the coach of the under 15s, said the team was excited and were looking forward to the new level of competition.
“Some of the girls have never been overseas before, so they’re very excited,” she said.
The girls have faced an invitational Fijian under 15s team at the State Age Championships in Camden in July and know it will be game on in December.
“They [the Fijians] are controlled and skilled,” Mrs Tomkins said. “We will learn something and they will learn something from us as well. They’re good athletes.”
The Lapstone/Glenbrook Netball Club have been hard at work fundraising to gather the $23,000 required to get the team to Fiji.
“We’re fundraising as a team so they all have the opportunity to experience the culture and the festival,” Mrs Tomkins said.
A fundraising barbecue is planned at Bunnings Valley Heights on November 4, and an outlet shopping bus tour on November 10.
