Blue Mountains councillor, Mark Greenhill, was re-elected mayor unopposed at last night’s council meeting. Cr Greenhill, a Labor representative from Ward 4 at the foot of the Mountains, has been mayor for five years, since shortly before the 2013 bushfires.
Liberal councillor Chris Van der Kley was re-elected deputy mayor, also unopposed. Cr Van der Kley represents Ward 2, as does the alternative deputy, Labor’s Cr Romola Hollywood, who nominated and was appointed unopposed last night.
Cr Greenhill said the next few weeks and months would be challenging, referring to the upcoming public inquiry into asbestos, to be conducted by Sydney QC, Richard Beasley.
“Our number one duty to this city is dealing with the issues that had concerned us around the management of asbestos and the key issue is getting it right for the workers.”
All three will serve for the next two years in their positions.
“We need to be open about whatever comes forward [from the inquiry],” he said.
