Blue Mountains Musical Society is edging closer to their premiere of We Will Rock You, directed by Linda Aubrecht.
The lead cast hail from a variety of professions, but are united by their passion for performance, and community theatre.
Macquarie University environmental law student, Micah Bawden, is set to play Galileo Figaro. The upcoming production will be Bawden’s seventh show with the society. His most rewarding theatre experience was starring as Tony in West Side Story in 2016. The Katoomba resident is particularly excited by the classic rock score of the show.
The romantic interest of Galileo Figaro will be played by kindergarten teacher, Sarah Namdar. The sassy Scaramouche is a contrast to other principal roles played by Namdar. As part of Blue Mountains Musical Society, she has taken on lead roles in Andrew Lloyd Webber classics, such as Phantom of the Opera, and Jesus Christ Superstar. She is now delighted to be starring in a production featuring a witty script by Ben Elton, and the iconic music of rock legends Queen.
Matthew Herne, also a school teacher, is elated to be part of the spectacular production. The former Springwood High School music teacher is portraying the traditionally female Killer Queen. He is eagerly anticipating donning his extravagant costume, which is currently being created by Emily Fairbairn. Herne is also thrilled to perform Queen songs on stage.
“It’s literally been the dream since I was five years old. It’s timeless music that still connects with people,” said Herne.
Blue Mountains salesman and Little Hartley resident, Ben Fairbairn, is thrilled to be starring as Khashoggi. Fairbairn first appeared with the society in Phantom of the Opera and has appeared in every show since. He enjoys being part of the inclusive community, and is delighted to be working with music director, Jem Harding.
“He makes sure every word, syllable and sound is placed with purpose to heighten the experience,” Fairbairn said of Harding.
Postal delivery worker, and parent, Nathan Hodge, will play Brit. Hodge is equally excited by the expertise and inventiveness of the creative team. He first appeared in a show with the society in 1992, at the age of eight. The highlight of his theatre experience was playing Jesus in the society’s highly regarded, Jesus Christ Superstar in 2017.
Hodge, a long-time fan of Queen’s music, was drawn to the script, which he describes as, “a ridiculous romp that will leave you smiling”. He also notes the society’s reputation for producing top quality productions, and assures We Will Rock You will be no exception.
Peter Gollop, an IT project manager, is relishing his role of Buddy, his first role with the society.
“Everybody is having a great time, even while working hard. From revising harmonies in Bohemian Rhapsody, to learning the choreography of Crazy Little Thing Called Love, everyone is having a blast.”
Phoebe Atkins, also a Blue Mountains Musical Society newcomer, will perform the role of Oz. The 17-year-old phone network concierge and Broadway hopeful enjoys being part of the encouraging community.
“They push me to achieve my best,” she said.
