Central Blue Mountains Rotary is hosting a special event on Wednesday, October 10 to mark five years since bushfires claimed 200 homes in the Blue Mountains and to “Lift the Lid” on the resulting mental health effects on the community.
Federal MP for Macquarie, Susan Templeman, who lost her home in the fires, will be the keynote speaker. She will outline the short and long-term mental health effects, and what has been done to help people in the past five years.
President of Springwood Rotary, Margaret Bell, will read the blog she wrote on the fateful day she narrowly escaped the inferno that claimed her home as well.
Education psychologist, Rose Glassock, will explain the effects on school students, many of them caught up in their families’ trauma and who struggled to cope.
Part of a documentary about the fires will also be shown.
This event will be held at the Grandview Hotel in Wentworth Falls at 6.30 for 7pm.
October is mental health month, so it’s timely to link “Lift the Lid” with Australian Rotary Health’s traditional “Hat Night” focus on mental health.
