The Friends of the Mechanics Institute in Lawson will present a night of guitar mastery when the Grigoryan brothers join jazz legend Wolfgang Muthspiel at the hall in February.
The concert will relive the performance by Slava Grigoryan, Muthspiel and US guitar virtuoso Ralph Towner, who enthralled a sold-out audience at the Mechanics Institute in 2014. Hearing the musicians play as a trio is sure to excite all audience members.
Towner was booked for this concert but was forced to cancel in late December due to ill health. Slava’s brother, Leonard, will instead make up the trio in the concert on Saturday, February 16. Leonard has played Towner’s music often and has composed his own pieces in a similar style.
Friends president John Sheehy said the organisers are passionate about bringing world-renowned musicians to the Mid Mountains and supporting the use of the historic 1903 public hall at Lawson.
“To view an original great art work in a gallery is a different experience to viewing a reproduction on a page,” he said.
“The same can be said for viewing and hearing in the intimate and evocative setting of the Lawson Mechanics Institute three exceptional, legendary guitarists of our time.”
With a repertoire spanning centuries, continents and genres, the Grigoryan brothers are two of Australia’s finest musicians. And Muthspiel, from Austria, is one of the world’s leading guitarists.
The trio will bring classical, baritone, 12-string and electric guitars to perform their own works, music by Towner, and pieces specially composed for this tour.
Tickets cost $80 each and will be allocated from the front of the hall to the back row as bookings are received.
