Blue Mountains Grammar School (BMGS) recently became the 2019 Australian Champions of the largest STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) competition in the world, titled F1 in Schools.

The win was a testament to the school's unique approach which incorporates Art into an integrated STEAM education program delivered to every age cohort throughout Primary and High School.

F1 in Schools nurtures 21st Century learning skills which prepare students for life beyond school in an increasingly technology-centric career market, and so the win was also recognition for the school's outstanding staff.

The school's STEAM lessons are identical at both the Wentworth Falls and Valley Heights campuses.

In Years 1 and 2, activities explore light painting, inertia spin art, standing wave patterns, 3D modelling, coding, electronics, mini robotics, and remote control vehicles.

Students also complete a Recycled Engineering unit  using recycled products to design and create earthquake-proof structures.

In Years 3 and 4, students create their own animations and video games, become town planners using 3D software, and investigate electricity created from sustainable sources.

In Year 5, students design jewellery and manufacture them with 3D printers and laser cutters; become rocket scientists, studying then creating their own rocket propelled vehicles; and learn coding - including programming robots to act out scenes from stories students have written and illustrated.

These skills provide the perfect platform for the school's suite of co-curricular STEAM programs and STEAM-related subjects studied in Years 7 to 10, which equip students brilliantly for a wide range of specialist HSC courses including Engineering Science, Industrial Technology, Design & Technology, Information Processes and Technology, Visual Arts, and all Mathematics and Science courses.

STEAM programs ... equip students brilliantly for a wide range of specialist HSC courses.
