Christeen Hull of Winmalee and Alex Forster of Mount Riverview have both been affected by cancer and have always felt the need to give back.
They volunteer for the Cancer Council in different ways and will be participating in this year's opening ceremony at Penrith Relay for Life, at Penrith Paceway on May 4 from 10am.
An ex-TAFE teacher, Alex Forster wears a number of different hats within Cancer Council - an information service volunteer at Nepean Hospital, a community speaker, Living Well After Cancer facilitator and a volunteer trainer for new recruits. She also makes beautiful Hope jewelry that are given to patients at the centre.
Christeen Hull is the volunteer coordinator for Cancer Council community speakers. She started in the information service at Nepean Hospital and is now working in the Parramatta regional office.
"We need to keep telling people about cancer," she said. "The community speakers program offers free cancer information presentations to all sectors of the community."
Ms Hull also volunteers for the Royal Flying Doctors and Springwood Neighborhood Centre and is a musician and artist. She was a mezzo soprano opera singer and will sing the national anthem at the opening ceremony at this year's Relay for Life.
There is a jam packed program at the event which celebrates cancer survivors and carers, remembers those lost, and unites the community to fundraise for a cancer free future.
New this year will be the Penrith CBD Box Car Lap at 3pm. People young and old have been making box cars (with boxes donated by Kennards Storage). Local businesses can sponsor a car and get their logo on it.
