Blue Mountains MP, Trish Doyle, has been promoted to the shadow cabinet by new state opposition leader, Jodi McKay.
Ms Doyle has been appointed shadow minister for women and the prevention of domestic and family violence. She has also been made the shadow minister for emergency services.
"I am excited and humbled to have been called to serve in the opposition shadow cabinet and I am excited to work alongside our new leader, Jodi McKay," Ms Doyle said.
"We have a strong, thoughtful and hard-working team that will take up the fight to the Liberals and hold them to account for the woeful job they've done running this state.
"I will be meeting with representatives from emergency services agencies like our RFS, Fire and Rescue NSW and the SES, and our community services sector who work at the coal face of responding to domestic violence and delivering women's services.
"I want to start by listening to their experiences and concerns so that we can formulate good policies to take to the next election."
In her maiden speech to NSW Parliament in 2015, she outlined her personal story of experiencing domestic violence at the hands of her father, including a terrifying night when, as an eight-year-old, he appeared at the bottom of her bed with a rifle.
She rushed to get her sister and brothers under the covers as she heard gun shots. The four children were eventually taken to what she described as an orphanage of sorts while her mother recovered from the trauma of a severe beating.
Ms Doyle said in the speech that she hoped to shine a light on domestic violence "and its devastating impact on children; the lives it destroys, the pain it inflicts ... to ensure that others might not need to experience what my family did".

Ms Doyle was elected to Parliament in 2015 and re-elected with an increased majority in March this year.
The former teacher won every booth in the electorate on the primary vote, with the exception of Mt Riverview Public School, which she later took on preferences.
She lifted her vote to a record breaking 64.8 per cent in the seat of Blue Mountains.
Ms Doyle has carved out a reputation for herself in parliament as a ruthless and effective attack dog who has hounded senior Ministers like Andrew Constance and Paul Toole on issues such as rail infrastructure, roads and public services.
